Minecraft Crossplay Explained: Can Java Play With Bedrock & Consoles? (2026)

With over 140 million monthly active players, Minecraft has one of the most confusing crossplay ecosystems in gaming history. Players constantly ask: "Can I play on my PC with my friend on PlayStation 5 or Xbox?"

The short answer: YES, but only if you are playing the Bedrock Edition. If you are playing Minecraft Java Edition, you cannot natively join friends on consoles.

Edition Comparison: Which Version Supports What?

Minecraft: Bedrock Edition FULL CROSSPLAY

The unified cross-platform engine built on C++. Compatible across:

  • Windows PC (Microsoft Store / Xbox App)
  • PlayStation 5 & PlayStation 4
  • Xbox Series X|S & Xbox One
  • Nintendo Switch
  • iOS & Android devices

✓ Requires a free Microsoft Account to connect friends across devices.

Minecraft: Java Edition PC ONLY

The original PC edition coded in Java. Highly moddable with Forge, Fabric, and custom shaders.

  • Windows PC
  • macOS
  • Linux

✗ Cannot natively join Bedrock servers or console friends.

Good News: PC Players Get Both Editions Free

If you purchase Minecraft on PC today (or play via PC Game Pass), Mojang includes the "Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC" bundle.

You do not need to buy the game twice. In the Minecraft Launcher, simply select "Minecraft for Windows" (Bedrock) when you want to join friends on PS5, Xbox, or Switch. Switch back to "Minecraft: Java Edition" when you want to play hardcore survival with PC mods.

How to Set Up Crossplay in Bedrock

  1. Launch Minecraft Bedrock Edition on any device.
  2. Sign in with your free Microsoft Account (mandatory on PS5 and Switch for crossplay).
  3. From the main menu, choose Play → Friends tab.
  4. Click Add Friend and enter your buddy's Xbox Gamertag.
  5. Once added, you can join their private worlds directly from your friends list, or send party invites.

Can Java and Bedrock Ever Play Together? (GeyserMC Bridge)

While Mojang does not natively bridge Java and Bedrock, the community has solved this with an open-source server plugin called GeyserMC (coupled with Floodgate).

If you run a dedicated Java server running Paper, Purpur, or Spigot, installing the Geyser plugin translates Java network packets into Bedrock packets in real-time. This allows Bedrock players on mobile, PC, and consoles (via DNS proxy tricks) to join a Java server!
